To meet the enormous demands on oil & gas resources according to the national economic construction and social development; To ensure the resources required by the development strategy of western China and project of "Transportation of the gas in the west to the east China".
Taking the great demands on oil & gas resources induced by the national strategy on developing western China and "transportation of natural gas in the west to the east" as an innovation platform, LIGCAS will give prominence to gas geochemistry and fully utilize her multidisciplinary research predominance in organic geochemistry, sedimentology, tectonic geology and stratigraphy to provide basic, strategic and foreseeable theoretical support for the national exploration and development on oil & gas resources as well as new exploration orientation. To establish, enrich and consummate the modern geological and geochemical theory on oil & gas with our own knowledge property right. To construct LIGCAS as a
thought reservoir on oil & gas exploration research in west China; an
innovation base on oil & gas geology and expert training base; an
important research center of modern oil & gas geology and
geochemistry in China. Scientific Targets To aim at internatonal
disciplinary frontier and hot-spot field, LIGCAS will carry out basic and
applied basic research in the field of
genetic theory of natural gas, non-hydrocarbon and noble gas geochemistry,
and deep gas
geochemistry. Furthermore, LIGCAS will focus research efforts on acquiring
originally innovated new theory,new method and new index, especially in
those aspects such as deep-horizontal, deeply buried, and low-mature and
immature oil & gas resources, and become one of the most

Key Laboratory of Gas geochemistry BRIEF INTRODUCTION The Key Laboratory of Gas Geochemistry (KLGG) belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) with main research interests focusing on the basic theory and application of oil & gas geology. Nowadays, the KLGG is under the administration of Institute of Geology and Geophysics, CAS. The director of the KLGG is Prof. Yang Changchun and the director of academic committee is academician Ouyang Ziyuan. Promoted by the demands of national economic growth on oil and gas resources, the laboratory pursues the international frontier of petroleum geology with special emphasis on the basic research of petroleum resources and application. In accordance with complexity and particularity of multi-cycle superimposed basin in China, the systematic study on the basic research of petroleum resources exploration, theory of application and key detection technique have been carried out, which makes fundamental, strategic, foresighted and innovative contribution to the development of oil and gas cause in China. At present, the KLGG have 63 fixed members, of which there are 20 professors, 12 associate professors and senior engineers, among them, 41members hold PhD degree and 12 members hold Master degree. The members under 45 years old accounts for 65% of the total members which constitute a strong scientific research and technology group with rational knowledge and age texture, united spirit and innovative capacity. The KLGG could undertake important scientific research and technology development tasks from nation and enterprise levels. Since its establishment, together with the powerful support of CAS, the KLGG has been equipped with a series of large analytical instruments forming a complete analytical technique system for petroleum geochemistry, of which the integrated analysis technique for carbon & oxygen stable isotopes and noble gas isotopes reach the internationally advanced proficiency that constitute a particular research platform for geochemical measurement and methodology in oil & gas geology field in China. Under the instruction of “Open, Flow, Union, Competition” idea, the KLGG has engaged lots of guest scientists from home and abroad to join in the laboratory research work, invited visiting scholars to give lectures and academic exchange, and held different kinds of academic meetings. Nowadays, the KLGG has kept good cooperation relationships with the national and international institutes, universities and corporations from China, Germany, USA, Japan, Russia, Canada, and so on. Facing the scientific frontier and national demands, the KLGG has undertaken and accomplished many important research and development tasks, of which include 56 research subjects from national levels, 34 national science foundation,19 international cooperation, 29 CAS and provincial levels, and 51 cooperation with oil companies. The KLGG has published over 1000 scientific research papers in recent years, of which over 200 papers are cited by SCI, 36 monographs and170 pieces of research reports for oil companies; awarded one the first and one the second grade National S&T Progress Awards; one the fourth grade National Natural Science Awards; 12 Departmental and Provincial Awards. These scientific research fruits have produced eminent social and economic effects and made great contributions to the research on the theory of petroleum geology and exploration for oil & gas resources in China. RESEARCH DIRECTIONS Based on the interdisciplinary combination of geology, geophysics and geochemistry, theoretical research on the evolution of oil and gas-bearing basin, mechanism of petroleum generation and dynamics of petroleum accumulation have been enhanced deeply. And special research interests focus on the key theory and technology of geophysical detection and gas geochemical measurement. periodical, Acta Sedimentologica Sinica is sponsored by LIGCAS and
published quarterly at home and abroad, with annual copies up to
6,500.Natural Gas Geoscience is another periodical edited by LIGCAS, which
is very popular in oil & gas exploration companies and ranks top 20 in
geoscience periodicals from 1995 to 1998 . CSCD and Japan S&T

Over 40 years, LIGCAS has organized numberous large-scaled field surveys focusing on the north-west oil & gas-bearing basins. The study areas stretch to Tarim and Junggar basins to the west, songliao basin to the east, and Yingehai basin ti the south. The footmark of LIGCAS's researchers covers all over the country and this has liad firm foundation on deeply studying oil & gas geology and related fields. LIGCAS has carried out numerous international cooperation with research institutions in over 20 countries, including UAS, Japan, Germany, Ganada, Russian, and so on, in the form of mutual visiting scholar. LIGCAS has successively hosted six international symposiums. Two symposiums entitled "international symposium on Organic Geochemistry of Oil & Gas-bearing basins in West China" and The 9th National symposium on Organic Geochemistry" are under LIGCAS's organization and will be held in August, 2002 Nearly 300 delegates from home and abroad are expected.
LIGCAS has cooperated with companies along the line of "Transportation of gas in the west to the east" project to construct scientific research and expert training base, with will provide the institute with a stable platfrom over a long period to ensure the sustainable development of LIGCAS. LIGCAS has alreadly signed contract with Qinhai, Changqing and Tarim oil fields to jointly construct the base. In combination with the state's strategic demands, LIGCAS will allocate a part of scientific power and resources to national projects in the form of cooperation with companies. Under the principles of mutual benefits and co-development, LIGCAS will realize double win with companies transferring by scientific and technologic fruits into production power.
Over several decades,LIGCAS, together with experts from oil industry, has carried out hard work, and "iron man" spirit has been deeply rooted in several generations. Under the guide of CAS construction thought in new era, the spirit will enhance the innovation culture development and become all staff's spiritual pursuit. To persist in "managing the institute by law" and "prospering the institute by virtue" and to set up perfect rules on accelerating. ensuring and stimulating the innovation work and behavior criterion. To build up visual and vivid outer images of LIGCAS that will show the fundamental connotation,idea and behavior rules of innovation culture. By the end of 2002, LIGCAS will display as a perfectly functioned, practical,energetic,and highly efficient research environment with scenic sight and cultural connotation. A modern scientific research garden suitable for the academic communication will appear in Lanzhou.
